folk music

We had a totally awesome weekend! Okay, I've always liked the idea of folk music...more for the hippie image than the actual music...but nonetheless. Went to a Cara Luft "concert"...I'm not sure if a quiet - 40 people max - in a coffee bar setting is considered a concert, but anyway...and totally Loved it! Cozy, personal, funny and good music! My dh was a little uncomfortable when Cara intro'd her shaving song...but other than that he Loved it too! I'm soooo glad that we BOTH love it! You know how that happens when one person loves it but the other one doesn't and then you either find friends who are on the same page or you let it go altogether...I'm the kind of person who'd let it go. My philosophy is that life's too short to spend time doing something I love without the one I love. It helps that my dh is of the same frame of mind...most times. I'm sure there are exceptions to my rule too. And I guess sometimes you just need girl time. Anyways...I'm veering off my chosen post path...Folk Music..focus! I am totally hooked! B brought the Wailin' Jenny's CD down on Sunday...I Love the Wailin' Jenny's! LOVE it! I want to find MORE folk artists! I think maybe Ian Tyson is a folk artist...so then I would have a CD of one other folk artist. We are absolutely going to hit the back 40 folk festival in Morden! I need to find out who's going to be there, then I can ask my folksy friends who these artists are and then talk to other people about them like I know what I'm talking about. Then I'll sound like I'm "in the know" :) and almost a hippie. I'm a hippie wannabee. There's a poem in there somewhere. I'm a hippe wannabee, I want hair down to my knees, I want to wear loose flowing clothes, and go to many folk song shows....well, it's a start, may need some editing. I'll work on it.

You are so funny! My bro and sil got us hooked on folk music. They know SO MUCH more than we do about all of it. So I just go to what they tell me to and listen to who they tell me to. I'm going to have to hook you up so you can gleen from their folky wisdom.

Ha! You think I'd make a good hippie, Jacklyn? What till you see the pic I'm going to post of my dh!! Now THERE'S a hippie...I'll see if I can figure the picture thing out again. I think I'd really enjoy hooking up with your bro and sil, miss m. I like that word gleen. It reminds me of ants for some reason. Not that I like ants...it's late.

Glad you LOVED the WJ's!! I think you will enjoy Dale Nikkle, I will bring you that CD next!!! My B and sil have got us into all kinds of neat folk music. We are interested in going to the back 40 festival, let us know when you want to go. B just mentioned going just this past weekend.

You sound like I felt a few years ago when we began discovering folk music... Growing up in southern SK the only option on the radio was country or CBC (which now would be my first choice for a station to listen to, but as a teenager i'm afraid it wasn't!) Moving to the 'peg and starting to go to free concerts in the park, etc, picking up the odd disc from the library, and finally the clincher, voyaging out to the famed folk festival (which is July 6-9 this year and i would highly recommend checking it out!!), has definitely cemented my love for this genre. I finally feel like i've found a sound that's "me"... something i would not have been able to say before folk music. (By the way, i'm enjoying your blog... hope it's okay that i'm crashing it and joining the dialogue... got the link from miss m's!) See ya!

TAM! It is very nice to hear from you! I'm glad you're crashing and joining the dialogue. So think the folk festival is worth it? I was wondering if it's gotten too big by now. P and I are not really big crowd kinda people...Thanks for introducing Miss M to folk music so that she can introduce us to folk music so that we could meet! Serendipity!
